Hot Stuff: MY2010+ MV Agusta F4/ B4 920 990 1090 Racing Water Pump Install!
Imagine this, you’re out riding your pristine and I might add sexy as all get out, 2010+ MV Agusta F4 or Brutale. The sun is shining, there’s a light breeze and there’s not a cloud in the sky. It’s a perfect day for riding! However, your ride takes you through a congested area with heavy traffic. While sitting there you notice the temperature gauge quickly starts to climb! The bike is so hot it feels like you’re sitting on a furnace! You look down and notice coolant bubbling over onto the ground! What the hell? Sound familiar? If so, then there’s a very good chance you’ve experienced what happens when your F4/B4 is fitted with the stock water pump.
The cure to what ails you (or more specifically your bike) is this; a Design Corse Racing water pump! It’s machined by Jet Prime however, the design is exclusively from Design Corse. It features precision CNC machining, strong 7075 T6 aluminum alloy and to add bit of flare and corrosion protection, the hose connection and impeller are anodized blue! This mini-turbo looking pump is so gorgeous, it’s a shame to cover it up with fairings! The kit comes complete with everything you’ll need for the install (minus tools). The only thing you’ll need to swap over is the stock pump cover and drain plug.
There are several reasons for performing this upgrade. The first being poor coolant circulation. Most MV Agusta F4s & B4s are notorious for running hot, particularly below 5000 rpms. The cause of this is a gap on the stock water pump between the impeller fins (which by the way are super small) and the inside of the pump housing. That gap combined with the tiny impeller fins means coolant is not able to circulate properly throughout the bike. As a result, the bike tends to overheat quickly! For example; in as little as 10 – 15 mins while sitting in traffic, your bike can reach temps over 250 degrees Fahrenheit! This is permanent engine damage territory here folks!
MV recognized the issue and made a feeble attempt to fix the problem with an upgrade kit to their stock water pump. This consisted of new internal pump parts, primarily a new impeller. For the most part this did not work and required the owner or dealer to remove then disassemble the stock pump to retrofit the updated parts. This process is timely, difficult and expensive! In short, the stock water pump is just a really poor, inefficient design! The solution is to completely replace the stock unit!
Enter in the Design Corse Race spec water pump! This all in one unit looks fantastic, is easy to install and it resolves the overheating problems caused by the poorly designed stock pump. The Design Corse CNC machined pump is built to extremely high tolerances! When comparing the DC pump impeller to the stock unit, there are 2 things that jump out at you. First, the impeller fins on the DC pump are huge!
This means maximum coolant circulation! Up to a reported 46% increase!!! The second thing you notice is, there’s virtually no gap between the impeller fins and the inside of the pump housing! Again, resulting in maximum coolant circulation regardless of RPMs! And what’s even better is, there’s an ancillary benefit as well; more horse power!!! Rubbish you say! Well look at it this way; every internal combustion engine on the planet has an optimal operating temperature, including the in-line 4-cylinder engine in your F4/B4 motorcycle. Any temp above or below this optimal mark and your bike doesn’t make or loses HP. So, while this racing pump doesn’t technically add HP, it does prevent parasitic HP loss due to the bike running hotter than it should. In turn, you have more HP available with this unit installed than you do with the stock unit! Awesome right?

To get even more cooling performance, combine your DC racing water pump with a set of Samco Silicon hoses and Engine Ice coolant. To take cooling to an even higher level, swap in a H20 performance radiator and aftermarket ECU with a custom map. Now we’re talking!!!!! However, keep reading to see exactly how simple this unit is to install!
The bike we’re working on today is a 2012 MV Agusta F4RR Corsacorta!
Put the bike on a rear stand or a paddock side stand. This job can be done on the bike’s stock side stand but, a rear stand just makes life easier.
Make sure the bike/engine is cool then remove the left and right-side fairings and belly pan. This will give you access to the stock water pump as well as the overflow tank and radiator cap.
Remove the radiator cap and set it aside.
Note: DO NOT remove the cap when the engine is hot! Hot coolant could shoot up at you and cause severe burns! Your bike must be cool!
Get a drain pan and place it under the water pump.
With an 8mm socket or wrench, remove the water pump drain plug and drain the coolant into the pan.
Once completely drained, using the same 8mm socket or wrench, remove the two 8mm cover bolts, then swing the pump cover up and out of the way.
Note: There’s no need to remove the hose from the cover unless you’re replacing the hoses as well.
Loosen the hose clamp on the hose that connects directly to the water pump.
Next remove the two 8mm bolts that hold the pump to the engine casing. One is on top of the pump just behind the hose. The other is clearly visible on the bottom of the pump.
With both hands grab the top and bottom of the pump and pull the unit straight out. You may have to wiggle it just a bit.
Note: A little oil loss is normal once the pump is removed.
Detach the pump from the coolant hose.
With a shop rag, clean the excess oil from the pump mounting surface on the engine casing.
Get your new Design Corse Racing water pump.
Put a dab of oil on your finger and lube the O-ring on the back of the pump as well as the pump mounting surface on the engine casing.
Note: DO NOT insert/install the pump with a dry O-ring as it could rip or tear which will result in an oil leak and who wants that.
Put blue Loctite on all 4 bolts that came with your DC water pump (2 for the pump and 2 for the cover).
Fit the coolant hose to the pump but, do not tighten the hose clamp just yet.
Fit the pump to the engine pump mounting surface by pushing the pump straight on until it’s completely seated. You’ll feel it click into place.
Note: Don’t forget to align the notch on the pump impeller shaft with the cog on the engine. The pump won’t seat properly if you don’t.
Torque the mounting bolts to 8 – 10Nm (71 – 88 in-lbs).
Now you can tighten the hose clamp.
Before swinging the cover back into place, inspect the O-ring on the back of the cover. If it’s damaged or worn to the point of distortion, replace it.
Lube the O-ring with a dab of oil. You don’t need much, so don’t go crazy here.
Using the cover bolts that came with the pump, reinstall the cover.
Note: YOU MUST USE WASHERS! The washers are what secures the cover to the pump, not the bolts. For my install, I went to the hardware store and got slightly larger washers. Probably not needed but, I felt the washers that came with the pump were a little on the small side and I was afraid of the cover popping off. Again, probably not needed but, I now have peace of mind.
Note: DO NOT over torque these bolts! Your racing pump is aluminum alloy. The last thing you want to do is strip the bolts or worse the pump! 8Nm (71 in-lbs) is all you need!
Reinstall the drain bolt (replace the crush washer if necessary) then fill & purge according to your owner’s or service manual then check for leaks.
Note: This is an ideal time to flush the system and fill with Engine Ice (recommended by MV) or the coolant additive of your choosing!
